5.01 Weight Loss Takes Time

In this HeartStrong.com video we are going to talk about the process of weight loss. Weight will usually accumulate over many years or decades, so it is not going to come off in a very short time. Trying to lose weight rapidly can actually be dangerous to your health.

A common thing I hear in clinical practice is “I was at my ideal body weight when I was in high school, then I gained 2 pounds each year over the past 30 years and now I am 60 pounds overweight!” The point being that in most cases it takes a long time to put on the weight, so it makes sense that the weight loss you want isn’t going to happen overnight.

A good goal for most people is about 1 pound per week of weight loss. This would mean that to lose those 60 pounds it is going to take more than a year. Those of you that need to lose more than 100 pounds, expect at least 2 years if you are able to stick to the program. Don’t get discouraged by this. Losing weight WILL be the best thing you ever did for your health and your life in general and it can happen quicker, especially if you stick to the whole foods plant based diet.
