2.36 Foods High in Fat

We discussed previously which foods have which type of fat in them, but which foods are just high in fat in general? Here is a quick list of the foods highest in fats, regardless of type:

  • Animal based protein sources (beef, pork, chicken, fish/seafood, eggs)
  • Dairy products (cheese, ice cream)
  • Butter, mayonnaise and other oil based spreads like margarine
  • All oils and fried foods
  • Commercially prepared baked goods
  • Fast food (french fries, chicken nuggets)
  • Many salad dressings (ranch dressing and oil based dressings are frequently 100% fat)
  • Nuts/seeds, avocado and coconut

Foods that are low in fat include most plant foods such as:

  • Fruits (except avocado and coconut)
  • Vegetables including green leafy vegetables
  • Whole grains
  • Beans/legumes

Remember the topic of Calorie Density that we discussed? Essentially all foods low in calorie density will be low in fat. Also, reducing the fat in your diet is very important, however the craving for fat may remain for a few weeks. Eventually, that craving will indeed subside, so keep up the low fat, healthy whole plant foods and eventually you can get there.
